Guidelines for Working with Students with Difficulties
Students with disabilities may have a variety of specific needs, including emotional, social,
cognitive or physical. It is important to recognize these needs to ensure tailored and effective
learning. The specific needs of students with disabilities may vary depending on the type of
disability they have.
With emotional and social needs, they may have challenges in regulating emotions, building
relationships with peers and dealing with stress. They need support in developing social skills
and emotional resilience. Some students may have cognitive learning difficulties, such as
dyslexia, dyspraxia or other specific learning disorders. These students often need adapted
teaching methods and materials to facilitate their acquisition of new information.
Students with physical disabilities may require classroom accommodations, such as accessible
spaces, assistive devices, or assistive technology in order to participate in class.
Students with inappropriate behavior may experience frustration or insecurity. They need
structure, clear rules and strategies to manage behavior.
Each student with disabilities may have unique needs that require Individualized Education
Plans (IOPs) based on their specific challenges and goals. Understanding these specific needs
is essential to providing effective support and ensuring an inclusive educational environment.
Inclusion implies the integration of students with difficulties into regular educational
frameworks, enabling them to access the same educational opportunities as their peers. This not
only helps these students develop social skills, but also enriches the experience for all students.
Teachers play a key role in creating a stimulating and supportive environment for students with
disabilities. They should be trained to recognize and adapt teaching methods to meet the
individual needs of students, as well as to provide emotional support.
It is also important to work with parents and professionals to develop individual support plans.
These guidelines can help create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
