Then the Pasadena Rose Parade was coming and she organized an idea for Pasadena's float for
New Year's Day......PASADENA 2020!
THE FLOAT WOULD BE CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT
granting Women the RIGHT TO VOTE!
BPW was involved and raised money via the sale of yellow roses
for the float and the funding of the 99 women suffragists and one
male supporter following the float. Did you know yellow roses
mean HOPE? The parade theme was "HOPE!".
Some descendants of the origi- nal women's right's movement rode
on the float as well as commu- nity leaders and of course the Stat-
ue of Liberty. The float won the theme prize! Nan received much
praise for her idea and inspira- tion.
After the Rose Parade, she had many requests to be a
speaker for many organizations, and the Sierra Mar District was fortunate she accepted their re-
quest. She was the keynote speaker for the conference, and I had the privilege to introduce her
and be seated next to her. ...it became an instant bonding of friendship.
She had belonged to many clubs, but not BPW. However, she was a speaker for BPW in
North Carolina! So of course, I told her about BPW and we too were celebrating 100th anniver-
saries. So she joined Hollywood BPW and contributed to our federation.
Then we had the pandemic and soon became a part of the Zoom federation. In the begin-
ning she attended our Zoom meetings and later Hollywood BPW proudly honored her as “SUSAN B.
ANTHONY HONOREE”. So many from all over the US joined our celebration and added many words
of praise and good wishes. She was so pleased that the plaque even had the original Susan B. An-
thony coin on it.
She continued to join our Zoom programs, but her husband was quite ill and passed away in
May of this year. Her own health became more fragile, but we still had wonderful conversations
and I loved hearing about her travels and the opportunity she enjoyed living in England when her
husband was a visiting professor teaching English Literature. ....and her remembrance of attend-
ing the Queen's Garden Tea.
I was sorry that we did not chat as often. Her Doctor was visiting her weekly and she was
moving to a smaller apartment. I phoned her but was unable to leave a message, then reading
about her passing away was personally so sad. But truly I have precious memories of our friend-
ship and wish I could have been her student in political science.
In Her final years as a speaker ,she gave talks in which she cited this quotation from
Susan B. Anthony: “OH, IF I COULD BUT LIVE ANOTHER CENTURY AND SEE THE FRUITION OF ALL
THE WORK FOR WOMEN! THERE IS MUCH YET TO BE DONE”.
Nan Johnson may remember those words of Miss Anthony, but our Hollywood BPW remem-
bers that Nan Johnson lived the words of Susan B. Anthony. “FAILURE IS IMPOSSIBLE”.
