How to Keep Members Coming Back
Retaining members requires taking the time to educate the member about the activi-
ties of our organization and Club. It also requires listening to the member and deter-
mining what they are expecting to gain from membership and getting them involved
with the activity, committee or project best matching their needs. Here are some ide-
as to help increase member retention.
✓ Retention Begins the Day a Member Joins
Research shows that if a member participates in at least two meetings throughout the
year or receives contact from their Club, in addition to a newsletter, the probability of
renewal increases dramatically.
✓ Connect with Members During Meetings and Programs
Establish goals and objectives for the entire membership.
Recognize member contri-
butions and achievements regularly.
Ask members to speak or to take responsibility
for obtaining a speaker for one monthly program.
Avoid the use of acronyms.
Announce at meetings what type of help is needed. Ask people for their help, face to
face. People like to be asked.
Hold a member orientation, either as a program or 5
minutes at each meeting, reminding people of the benefits available, the successes of
Business and Professional Women, and its importance to the community.
✓ Make Meetings Relevant and Interesting
Use a rotation schedule ensuring variety.
Develop at least one program during the
year providing natural media opportunities (i.e., Woman of the Year or Pay Equity
Day) and permitting everyone to work together on a common activity.
Provide net-
working opportunities during each meeting.
