“THE ROLE AHEAD”
Written by CAROLYN SAVAGE CAC CHAIR 2021 to 2024
PUBLIC SPEAKING TASK FORCE
Public Speaking competitions have been seriously affected by the Covid19 pandemic with no
regional heats held during 2020 and only one in Northern Ireland during 2021. The BPW Inter-
Regional Public Speaking Championship has not been held since the inaugural event in Northern
Ireland in March 2019 when we had six teams from three regions participating. The three re-
gions were Northern Ireland (hosts), North West and Midlands (NWM) and Southern England
and Wales (SEW).
Northern Ireland Region held a competition in the autumn. The rules were slightly amended to
allow teams to compete in a school bubble and public health guidance was observed. Five teams
competed and the winning team was St Catherine’s College.
Looking forward, the NI Region plans to hold heats later this year and a NI final early next.
The NWM and SEW regions are currently planning on holding heats later this year or early
next. If this happens the BPW Inter-Regional Public Speaking Championship could take place
in late March 2023. Sponsorship for the Inter-Regional Championship is in place thanks to
the continued generosity of Ulster Carpets.
