Iceland Prime Minister

at the BPW 17th European Conference

There were many incredible women sharing their knowledge and experience with us
at the 17th European Conference in Reykjavik. Icelandic Prime Minister Katrin
Jackobsdóttir’s speech spoke to me the most- we were both born in the same year
and are working mums of three children. Her strength, intelligence, career and ac-
         tions really inspired me.

I have learnt that despite Iceland having topped the World Economic Forum’s Gender
Gap Index for the last 13 years, they claim that there is a lot more that can be done,
and everything that has been achieved has not been without a fight. Quoting the
Prime Minister in my own understanding, equality is not just about a pay-cheque; if
women are not safe in the workplace and outside of it, how can we eradicate gender
-based discriminations and violence? She disclosed the shocking fact that despite
Iceland being the most peaceful place in the world, 50% of all crimes are gender
         based.

Parental leave and childcare in Iceland have evolved to allow both parents to partici-
pate in childcare duties by promoting equal time off work for each parent and child-
care options when returning to work. It is very clear that the government of that
country has understood that no woman should have to choose between looking after
her children or returning to work. That has enabled much fairer career competition,
         in my view.

Iceland is renowned for being one of the most equal countries in the world. However,
after hearing so many influential Icelandic women speak at the Conference, they all
seem to agree that there is a lot still to be accomplished; I couldn’t agree more.

What a remarkable Conference, I am forever grateful to BPW UK, BPW Europe and
BPW International for offering such incredible opportunities, experiences and expo-
sure to our members. I feel honoured and empowered after such a fantastic 5 days
         in Iceland.

         Thank you
