GLOSSARY The muscular system acts on the skeletal system, by using the joints.

muscle Muscular contraction moves bones at
joints. Tendons connect bone to muscle,
and ligaments connect bone to bone.
JOINTS
Tendon
A joint is where two or more bones
Frontal bone Parietal bone meet. They serve to connect the
Temporal bone bones, and most of them also allow
Occipital for movement. There are three types
Maxilla of joints: synovial, cartilaginous
Mandible and fixed.
Clavicle
Synovial (moves freely). They are the
Scapula
Sternum most numerous. They allow movement.
Humerus
Ribs
Vertebrae

Coxal Ulna
bone Pubis Cartilaginous (moves partially). They
are found between bones that are kept
Ischium Carpals
together by cartilage and allow limited
movement.
Metacarpals
Coccyx
Phalanges
Femur
Patella
Fixed (cannot move). These are joints
in which the bones are fused together
with fibrous connective tissue.
