ABSTRACT
This study is motivated by the phenomenon of modern urban society that is
increasingly bound by technology and busyness, resulting in prayer (salat) often
being neglected or merely regarded as a ritual routine. In fact, salat is the central
pillar of Islam that encompasses spiritual, physical, and mental dimensions, which
can support the holistic health of Muslims. This study aims to elaborate the meaning
and values of salat, examine the influence of its spiritual dimensions on physical
and mental health, and analyze its relevance to the lives of Muslims in urban
settings.
The methodology applied is a literature study (library research) with a qualitative
approach. Data were collected from the Qur’an, Hadith, classical Islamic texts,
contemporary books, as well as national and international scientific articles that
discuss the relationship between salat and both physical and mental health. Data
analysis was conducted through reduction, categorization, presentation, and content
analysis, producing a comprehensive theoretical synthesis.
The results show that salat is not merely a religious ritual but also a form of mild
physical exercise involving almost all skeletal muscles, improving posture,
enhancing joint flexibility, and promoting blood circulation, thereby contributing to
the health of vital organs such as the heart and brain. From the mental health
perspective, salat has been proven to reduce stress, lower anxiety, strengthen
emotional resilience, and enhance inner peace. Spiritually, salat serves as the
primary means of drawing closer to Allah SWT and becomes a pillar of life balance
for Muslims.
In conclusion, this study emphasizes that salat is a holistic practice integrating
spiritual, physical, and mental dimensions, making it highly relevant as a solution
to modern health crises, especially in urban communities. Therefore, raising
awareness and improving the quality of salat practice are essential to maximize its
benefits for both individual and communal well-being.
