Plan the content and visuals of your new site
Now you have an idea of what migrated pages will look like and the sort of thing
that you need to do, you can start to plan and visualise your new u3a SiteWorks
site. For some u3as this might involve committee input.
This part of the process is thinking and planning time for you as you can consider
how you want each page of your site to look in the future and decide how you
can achieve it. If you are seeking some inspiration then please take a look at the
sites that have already migrated. These are listed with their respective URLs in
Appendix A of this workbook. Just as you used the demo site on Local you will
now be able to use u3a SiteWorks on your own content to see how things could
look. The better your planning at this stage, the smoother and faster your
migration will be.
One thing you will have to do on every page is to convert the content into blocks
and then apply block styles to meet your page vision. When you migrate your
Migrator can help with converting to blocks but realistically cannot choose new
block styles or add or delete content as he/she doesn’t share your page vision
and doesn’t know anything about your u3a. The ideas and content therefore
need to come from you.
As you have seen many pages look very good indeed. You might decide that
some pages just need a tidy-up before going live but some you might want to
modify. Some you might want to add photos and additional text to a main group
page but also add Event information or Posts to some groups. Some data you
might want to delete and you might even want to delete the content of a whole
page and rewrite it. There are no hard and fast rules. This is your website and
your content.
Some of the Pioneers used paper and pen to roughly sketch out how they
thought each page on their site would look and what items would go on each
page. It's a good idea to do this, identifying the required text and media
required. In your design you can use columns, white spaces etc., to enhance the
visitor experience.
Some Pioneers wrote additional content and stored it on their computing device
as a text file to copy and paste the text later (as you saw Nick doing in his demo
video). In a folder containing such prepared text they stored new photos as well
to drag and drop into the media library to save time later. If you do these things
then you can play with your content on Local and see what it would look like.
You can make changes to your Site Builder site now which reflect your plans for
your SiteWorks site, such as creating new navigation buttons if you intend to
move things around. These changes would be reflected in your final data extract
and would save time at migration stage. Just remember to keep your Site Builder
site relevant for users during the transitional period.
