u3a Groups
This is another Dashboard menu prefaced with ‘u3a’ which tells us that this is
special to u3a. This is another area where we, as Web Managers, spend a lot of
our time and the content is applicable to our u3a specifically. It’s another area
that your Migrator can help you to set up but he/she does not know your u3a so
really will not be able to help you much with the content. This is therefore
another area where you need to be competent when you get to migration.
Our group pages are where we advertise our group’s purpose and activities to
new and prospective members and enable those people to contact group
leaders via the website. The good news is that this has basically not changed
and when we migrate our group page content, media, links, etc. also migrate so
there is no need to reinvent the wheel. What we shall have to do is to
edit/format our page content and add the Venue data and maybe edit the
Contact data that we have just discussed.
We also have the opportunity to access many new features to make our group
pages much more attractive and content rich. You have already seen some of
the basic page formatting in an earlier section but soon we’ll be discussing more
block types as well as Events and Posts that can be used very effectively on our
group pages.
Using Site Builder is not intuitive and it has often been difficult to get group
leaders to engage and contribute to their pages but the graphical interface
approach of u3a SiteWorks is much more user-friendly and could result in a
wider pool of authors, thus reducing our workload as Web Managers.
Go to the Dashboard and navigate to Groups. Click on u3a Groups and you have
three options; All Groups, Add New Group, and Group Categories and we’ll look at
each in turn.
