JOIN THE HERD
DON’T HESITATE TO VACCINATE
by Ross Potts
Special Projects
Lately, we have been hearing a lot about Herd immunity, but what exactly does that mean and how does it
relate to us? Herd immunity occurs when a high percentage of the community – the herd - is immune to a virus
(through vaccination and/or prior illness), making the spread of the virus from person to person much harder or
unlikely. Herd immunity protects the most vulnerable members of our population. If enough people are vacci-
nated against COVID-19, those who are susceptible and cannot get vaccinated are provided with some protec-
tion because the virus will not be able to “find” those susceptible individuals. So, by getting vaccinated you are
in turn helping your community.
As COVID-19 vaccinations are ramping up across the State with the number of mass vaccination centers now
expanded to 9, we talked to several DDS Team Members who have been vaccinated about their experience and
their thoughts on why you should consider getting vaccinated too.
Reggie Smith, Human Resources, took his Moderna shots on January 13th and February 10th at the Lou
Walker Senior Center in Stone Mountain. He experienced a sore arm from the first shot and experienced chills,
severe headache, and muscle spasms from the second shot. He continues to have periodic fatigue from hav-
ing his shots. Reggie had no hesitation for getting his vaccines and advises anyone who is hesitant to make an
informed decision based on science and your own personal circumstances.
Ross Potts, PMO, took his Moderna shots on January 15th and February 12th at Piedmont HealthCare in
Conyers. He experienced a sore arm from the first shot and experienced a high fever and severe upper body
joint pain from the second shot the following morning for about 4+ hours (Advil did the trick). He has not had
any lingering reactions to the vaccines. Ross had no hesitation for getting his vaccines as he wanted to be safe
for his 96-year old Mom. He advises anyone who is hesitant to read up on topic and make a decision that is right
for you, for your family, and your situation.
