Vegetable of the Season – Carrots: The original colour of carrots was not the
expected orange, but bright purple! I have grown red, yellow, white, purple and black carrots
using seeds available at Living Seeds in South Africa. You can also get seeds for carrots that are
round and other shapes.
Companion plants: Companion plants: basil, lettuce, onions, parsley, rocket, sage,
tomatoes and radishes. Bad Companions: dill, cabbage, cauliflower.
Varieties: Danvers, Berlicum, ‘Cosmic Purple’ Nantes, Imperator, Chantenay and Ball

Organic Gardening Tips
• If you have clay soil it is a good idea to grow your carrots in a raised bed or pots that have
been filled with a sandy loam type of soil.
• Worm castings can be added to the soil to improve the crumb structure and the nutrient
content of the soil.
• Unlike other root vegetables, do not add organic fertilizer to the soil when growing carrots
as this causes them to split in all directions instead of growing downwards searching for
nutrients.
• If your carrots are attacked by carrot aphid or white fly spray with a jet of water.
Alternatively do the same with a little sunlight liquid added to the water. This organic
method of controlling pests is useful for soft bodied pests if found on other vegetables too.
