The Mexican Garden
We have a lot of plants from Mexico growing in gardens around Botswana. The
desert plants are especially well adapted to our arid conditions, like most of the
Yuccas, Cacti and Agaves. Along countless roads around the country you will find
Washingtonia robusta, the Mexican Fan Palm/Washington Palm, and Jacarandas. And
while many of us will find the Agave sisalina and other Agaves (see below left) frus-
tratingly invasive and prickly to remove, they do provide incredible security and a
very important fibre if made use of.
Spiky plants abound in Mexico, from Prickly pears, to Dasylirions (below middle)
Yuccas (Below right), and it has over 150 varieties of cacti, like Echinocactus grusonii,
