"DEMOCRACY PRIZE"

A spontaneous demonstration by tens of thousands of participants,
following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to dismiss
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who had expressed concern
at the damage that judicial reform would cause to the army’s
state of readiness. Ayalon South, Tel Aviv, 26 March 2023

The awarded photo captures a moment of civil strength, a
moment of authentic civil rage that swept the country’s streets.
The picture expresses the strength of social protest and
illustrates civilians’ critical role in protecting democracy.
The fire, the flags, and the crowds of demonstrators in the heart
of a busy city bestow explosive power on the photo as it calls
to take note of the citizenry’s enormous power in preventing the
6 country from collapsing during those months of social struggle
against the judicial overhaul, which was an attempt to deal a
mortal blow to the foundations of democracy. The exhibit was
displayed at the height of the “Swords of Iron” war and after the
7th October massacre, it is spine-chilling to consider what might
have happened if the Defense Minister had been dismissed.
This picture also contains some degree of hope – the
spontaneous protest created a massive counter-weight
and succeeded in preventing the attempted dismissal.
It contains hope, in that the public is willing to come
out in huge numbers and defend democracy.
