54 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
Her Forever Favorite Holiday
By Diana A.
My mom is the mother of seven kids and
grandmother to eight children. My mom is a very
kind person and always helps out people, especially
my family.
When she was a little girl, she spent her favorite
holiday in Mexico. She was born in La Caja Irapuato,
Guanajuato. Her favorite holiday is Christmas and
the whole month of December. Her memories of
Christmas as a child are very special. Christmas was
her favorite holiday because it is when they would
celebrate Jesus being born. In Mexico, they wouldn't get gifts because there wasn't enough work.
When it was Christmas Eve, my grandma and my momś aunts would make tamales, but
they would have to go to this one place to get real maize, which is corn flour. They would wake
up very early in the morning to go because a lot of people would go and the line would be very
long. When they returned home and started prepping everything, my mom would help my mom
blend the tomatillo. When they placed the red sauce and a piece of meat in the hoja, it would
smell so good but spicy. It would smell like that all day because everyone would be making
tamales.
After they were done making tamales, they would all sit and wait for the tamales to be ready
and watch the sunset. Meanwhile, all the kids would get ready, especially my mom because
everyone would go to my grandma's house and have a fire pit. When everyone was there, they
would make canela, which is cinnamon tea or coffee. Everyone would eat their tamales and sing
