Memories
By David Herrera
When I was younger, I lived in La Caja, Mexico. La Caja is a small town close to the city
of Irapuato. The sky was always very clear and blue, and the sun was always out. The weather
was perfect with fresh, clear air. There were lots of flowers and animals, living peacefully with
the people of the town, and always an amazing aroma from my mom’s cooking. It would linger
in my nose. I already knew that the food was going to be delicious.
I was 9 years old and my parents
were by my side like they always were, but
on this day, I rode with my dad by
horseback to help him with some work
down at the strawberry field. My mom was
making the food for when we came back.
She asked us to get some strawberries from
the field since we were already there.
On our way back, my dad and I were riding when his horse suddenly got scared. His
brown horse raised up and pawed the air. This knocked my dad off, forcing him to the gravelly,
gray ground. He stood back up and patted the dirt and rocks and gravel off his dark jeans and his
red button-up shirt. He smiled at me and reassured me that he was ok. He got his horse to calm
down with some oats and water. After that, we rode back home. This was an eventful day, and
luckily my dad didn’t get hurt.
