Hand Cream
• There are thousands of hand creams available, each with its own claim to
moisturize, heal, and/or decrease the effect of aging on the skin.
• These products contain ingredients to help improve their melting point, skin
   softening capabilities, texture, and odor:
  1) Liquid paraffin:
     - It is important for desired consistency and as an effective “carrier” for the
         moisturizer.
2) Water:
   - It serves as a moisturizer in conjunction with other ingredients.
   - It serves as a cooling agent, to soothe irritated skin.
   - It also is important to imparting desired consistency and texture to hand
      creams.
3) Other moisturizers:
   - Such as lanolin and shea butter.
   - In combination with water, these moisturizers work by coating the
surface of the skin and “trapping” water molecules to the skin surface by
      inhibiting evaporation.
   - They are typically not water-soluble.
                                                                            43
