Medicated Creams
• The emulsion of these creams serves as a convenient vehicle for an active
principle (drug). Thus, emulsion system must be selected to ensure maximum
effectiveness of the medicament included.
o Where surface effects only are required e.g., sun sunscreen products, oil
phase ingredients which penetrates the skin must be avoided.
o Where local systemic effects are desired e.g., in the case of hormone
creams, the emulsion must be formulated, so that, controlled penetration
occurs.
• Thus, knowledge of factors which influence skin penetration is, therefore,
important when formulating this class of product.
