Pharmacy First:
Supporting Women’s Health
On January 31 , the much-anticipated National Pharmacy First
st
Advanced Service for England was officially launched. This new
service addresses the increasing demand for walk-in healthcare
advice and treatment within community pharmacies, particularly
as patients encounter challenges securing same day GP
appointments. Beyond alleviating funding pressures in the sector,
this initiative significantly enhances healthcare accessibility
for patients in areas where such access is constrained in other
primary care settings. The funding for this service is an integral
component of the £645 million investment commitment outlined
in the 'Delivery Plan for recovering access to primary care.
The Clinical Pathways element of the service enables management of
seven common conditions with Prescription-Only- Medicines (where
appropriate) that patients can access either by referral as walk ins or if
they have been identified as suitable for the service.
Women’s Health
Women’s health as a category is broad, and each
of the seven common conditions listed as part of
the Pharmacy First service can apply, but one that
is specific to women only is the Uncomplicated
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in women.
OTC support
In cases where prescription medication isn't appropriate, a diverse range of over-the-
counter (OTC) products, including those from leading brands and our own Numark brand
alternatives, is available to assist patients dealing with various minor ailments and more.
Examples of OTC products available to support the self-care of UTI symptoms include:
