Generics support
Anyone that has worked in or around the dispensary for any period of time
will tell you that the generic market is volatile – the last 18 months have
really demonstrated this.
Unlike brands, generic pricing can fluctuate, and pricing is dependent on
what is going on in the market in regards to supply and demand.
Add in to this the quarterly adjustment of Category M reimbursement
and you can start to see why the generic market is so complex to stay on
top of, and the importance of only purchasing what you need during the
month. Bulk buying generics can often feel like gambling on stocks and
shares… the good price you think you have one day may be higher than your
reimbursement the following day.
The chart below demonstrates the fluctuation in reimbursement, often a
good indicator as to what is happening to pricing over the past 15 months,
with average pricing coming down vs the high we saw in the summer.
This is good news of course as it means your spend on generics will decrease.

However, some of the challenges we are seeing globally at the moment is
starting to have an impact on the pricing you are seeing in generics and you
may start to see some challenges around availability and price as a result.
