AI in pharmacy
Friend or foe?
The robots are taking over—or at least, that’s what some
would have you believe. With artificial intelligence (AI)
making waves across industries, pharmacy is no exception.
But is AI here to replace pharmacists, or could it be the
helping hand the sector has been waiting for?
As pharmacies continue to face mounting pressures, from
staff shortages to increasing patient demand, AI presents
a compelling opportunity. Rather than being a foe, AI has
the potential to reduce risk, improve efficiency, and most
importantly, free up pharmacists to focus on their patients.
Automating the everyday
One of AI’s most immediate benefits lies in automating
repetitive tasks. Prescription management, stock
control, and administrative duties can consume a
significant portion of a pharmacist’s time. AI-powered
systems integrated with pharmacy management
records (PMRs) can help streamline these processes,
reducing human error and allowing pharmacists to
concentrate on clinical care.
Enhancing patient safety and clinical
decision-making
One of the biggest concerns in pharmacy is ensuring
patient safety. AI-driven tools can assist in medication
management by flagging potential drug interactions,
optimising dosages, and providing real-time clinical
decision support. By leveraging data from multiple
sources, AI can help pharmacists make informed
recommendations, reducing the risk of dispensing errors.
