Legislative changes on the
horizon
Looking ahead, there are changes on the
horizon that you may not be aware of. I am
excited about the government’s plans to
remove restrictions in existing legislation that
only allows for hub and spokes to operate
within the same legal entity.
Hub and spoke dispensing involve separate
locations where routine prescription
assembly occurs at a central ‘hub,’
often using automation, freeing ‘spoke’
dispensaries to focus on direct patient care.
They are proposing two models of hub-
and-spoke dispensing across the UK, set to
come into effect on January 1, 2025. These
legislative amendments are designed to
support the healthcare sector by allowing for
the introduction of hub-and-spoke models
to increase efficiency, free up time for more
clinically focused tasks, and help teams
deliver more services and provide greater
face-to-face patient care.
Additionally, the Department of
Health and Social Services (DHSS)
is proposing to allow dispensing
doctors access to hub
pharmacies.
This move follows a UK-wide
consultation conducted in the
spring of 2022, which gathered
views on removing the barrier
that currently limits hub-
and-spoke models to
pharmacies within the
same legal entity. The
goal is to ensure the
safe and effective
implementation of
this policy, ultimately
enhancing the efficiency
and quality of patient care.
