What is the interest of Uzbekistan?
In recent years, practical measures have been taken to implement transport projects in
conditions of mutual trust and a friendly environment in Central Asia. The Navoi international
intermodal logistics center is rapidly developing, which connects Uzbekistan with large
logistics centers of foreign countries, in particular Frankfurt, Milan, Brussels, Vienna,
Zaragoza, Oslo, Basel, Dubai, Tehran, Shanghai.
The construction of the Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan-China railway has also intensified.
This project is of current importance for the SCO space. Its implementation will expand trade
and economic ties between project participants with all other Central Asian countries and
China. This railway will become one of the shortest routes for delivering Chinese goods to
European countries due to the possibility of cargo transportation from China through
Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to the countries of Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and will
also serve the development of transport and logistics infrastructure. throughout Central Asia.
The strategic future and prospects of Central Asia directly depend on the active
participation in regional processes of Afghanistan, which is considered an integral part of the
region. During the visit of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to Uzbekistan in 2017, an
agreement was reached on the implementation of the project for the construction of the
Surkhan-Puli-Khumri power transmission line. The new line will increase the supply of
electricity from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan by 70%, that is, up to 6 billion kWh per year.
The development of transport cooperation with Afghanistan and the construction of
new railways within the Trans-Afghan Corridor will provide Central Asia with access to the
ports of the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf along the shortest routes, and will connect
South and Southeast Asia with Europe and China. markets.
Recently, countries in the region have been intensifying efforts to expand their
international transport capabilities. Today, a number of international transport corridors are
being created through Central Asia. In 2018-2023, it is planned to build and put into operation
the Eurasia transport corridor connecting China and Western Europe. This highway starts
from Beijing and continues through Astana, Moscow and Minsk to Berlin. According to
preliminary estimates, by 2050, this corridor will transport 37 million passengers
annually.
As for the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran corridor, in May 2018 a container train from
China ran in this direction. It took about 2 weeks to cover this distance, which is on average
twice as fast as by sea. By 2022, the volume of freight transported by rail is expected to reach
15 million tons per year.
The East-West project is aimed at establishing transport links between China and
Europe. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is an important link in this transport corridor. This
project plays an important role in establishing regular cargo transportation from Turkey and
Europe to the countries of Central Asia, China and Iran.
For China, the project is very important for several reasons. Firstly, it will stimulate
the economic development of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy. Most container trains from
