They put their bikes onto the verge and made for the gate into the field. There
were lots and lots of lambs with their mothers in the field. They climbed over
the gate and ran to the sheep. The other sheep scattered at the sight of Bells and
Ellie racing across the grass. The poor old ewe rocked left and right but was
stuck.
“I think we should hold onto her legs on one side and pull her over” said Bells.
“I agree. I have seen Mummy and Grandpa do just that”, replied Ellie.
So together they grabbed the ewe’s left legs and pulled her over.
“Right, round the other side and push her”, said Bells knowingly.
They rushed around to the other side of the sheep and pushed her.
The ewe could now get her legs in position to push up and stand. Once up, she
was off! In hot pursuit were two hungry looking lambs. As soon as she
stopped, they latched on to her udder to have a much needed drink.
Just then a man called out “What are you doing on my land?”
Bells and Ellie were a bit frightened but there was no point in running away
because their bicycles were close to where the man stood.
They walked slowly towards the man. Bells started to explain about the ewe.
“Oh, why didn’t you say before~, said the man. “I am so grateful for what you
have done but how did you know what to do?”.
“Mummy is a vet and grandpa keeps sheep”, said the girls in unison.
“Who is your mummy, then?” asked the man.
“Caroline Richards”, said Bells.
“I know your mum. She is a really good vet. She has been out to help me
several times”, said the man with a big smile. “You girls have done really
well”. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a £5 pound note. “Here, put
this in your money box”.
“Thank you very much. That is so kind of you. Helping your sheep was a
pleasure”, said Bells and Ellie agreed.
“Goodbye”, said Ellie and Bells. They climbed back on their bikes and
continued their journey. They pedalled for another ten minutes before stopping
at a sunny clearing at the side of the road. Here they had that picnic that
