“I think I will have a biscuit as well to keep me going”, he said.
“Have what you like, Harry. You deserve it,” said daddy.
Harry grinned as he tucked into a chocolate biscuit and thought about his
success.
“You are second on the grid for the last race. Only one to overtake and a lot of
karts behind you trying to overtake you, so think about your plan”, said his
daddy.
“I think I will try to follow the kart in front as close as I can and take a chance if
I can see it”, said Harry.
“Sounds a good plan”, said James who by now had completed all his checks.
Jack walked down the pit lane letting drivers know that they ccould go out for
their last race.
They pushed the cart out to grid position 2. Harry put on his helmet and
climbed into the kart.
Jack walked up and down the grid checking everyone was in the correct place.
“Start your engines”, yelled Jack.
There was a roar as the karts started up. The excitement was welling up inside
Harry. He watched Jack. The flag went up and Harry revved the engine and
held the kart on the clutch. Down went the flag and off they went. Harry got a
good start and was right on the tail of the front driver. Harry followed him
exactly as they went into each bend. He had to break really hard and accelerate
as fast as the kart would go to keep up. Two laps passed and Harry was holding
his position but he was finding it impossible to overtake. Lap 3 was no
different, he just hung on. Lap 4 and he started to believe that he would at least
finish second if he kept up his concentration. Then, on lap 5, the leader clipped
one of the tyre barriers and spun off the track. Harry had to react quickly so that
he didn’t hit the spinning kart and so lost a bit of speed and there was a real risk
that he would be overtaken.
He gave the kart full throttle and flew into the next bend taking a perfect line.
Three bends to go and he drove faster than ever, taking risks, determined to hold
off any challengers.
Before he knew it, he flew past the chequered flag. He had won his first race!
Harry returned to the pits jubilant. He could see James and his Daddy jumping
for joy and waving frantically at him as he approached.
