Reactions between ions
Types of reactions between ions
1) Neutralization reactions.
2) Metathesis reactions.
3) Redox reactions.
4) Complexation Reactions.
1) Neutralization reactions
➢ The reaction between acids and bases to produce very weakly dissociated water
-14
(Kw = 10 ).
❖ Example:
NaOH (aq) + HCl (aq) → NaCl (aq) + H 2O (aq)
➢ The driving force in all neutralization reactions is the formation of H2O as a very
weak electrolyte.
❖ Applications
1) The antacid magnesium hydroxide in the milk of magnesia is used to neutralize
stomach HCl.
2)
2) Removal of rust (Fe2O3) from the surface of steel using acids before protective
coating with tin or zinc.
