What type of company is best and worst for you? Describe a position you held that you should not have
accepted.
The type of company that best suits me is a company that has a clear vision and mission statement and allows the
employees to fully participate and utilize their full potential in the attainment of the organization’s mission and
goals. A teaming culture.
The worst type of company would be an organization that does not value employee input and stifles any initiative
that the workforce would participate in to ensure continuous improvement and company growth.
A position that I should not have accepted was as the JointStars Program Manager. Don’t get me wrong, it was a
very intense and fulfilling position; however as my first job out of the US Navy it was not a good fit for me. I should
have done more research on the company and their culture. The fact that soon after I arrived, a larger company
started to make heavy overtones to acquire the company which made the whole workforce uncomfortable. The
whole acquisition scenario played out over several months and took a heavy toll on the workforce. It is not that
some acquisitions are not good for certain organizations; it is more how the acquisitions are executed. I view this
experience as a very valuable and important lesson learned.
Describe your quality assurance experience.
My quality assurance experience had its beginnings as a young man in the US Navy working as a jet mechanic,
learning the ropes of great quality. This experience really allowed me to gain an important perspective; the fact
that someone’s life depended on my work was a great responsibility. Subsequently I went into the flight program
as a P-3 Flight Engineer, and worked with my quality counterparts. As the inflight systems specialist, I was the
quality assurance person anywhere that the aircraft went. Later in my naval career I managed the squadron
Quality Assurance Division.
Before getting out of the US Navy I earned an FAA A&P License which further honed my quality assurance skills.
For the last eighteen years I have also been involved with quality from a prospective of manufacturing, engineering,
and suppliers. My supplier quality background has involved many difference aspects such as supplier surveys,
audits, and performance metrics. A suppliers’ quality stance is indicative to their commitment to the customer.
How would you describe your core competencies? Describe what you like to do most and least; can be in
business or your personal life.
My core competencies are:
- Communication
- Relationship Building
- Decision Making
- Teamwork
- Reliability
- Problem Solving
- Adaptability
Business: I like to take complex problems and turn them into usable opportunities. This requires innovative and
creative thinking (thinking out of the box), and getting buy in from your team to be able to execute.
