Future of the Classroom
The Future Classroom
Student-Centered Learning (SCL)
Traditional learning approach of teacher-centered learning applied in the classroom no longer relevant these days
where student-centered learning is now taking place. Educators should have more time to learn about technology
to enhance the learning experience while students have the opportunity to personalize their learning environment
(Kalpana Kumari,2015). Students in Student-Centered Learning (SCL) environment plays an active role in perceived
knowledge through the process that include teamwork, collaboration and communication skills among the students
while teacher is playing the role as facilitator to guide the students to achieve the learning outcomes.
Characteristic of Student-Centered Learning
The characteristic of SCL is explained in one article of
Education Services through their article in the section The
Six Sign of Student-Centered Classroom. Student-Centered
Learning approached the class through active learning
method that acquire collaborative learning throughout the
lesson. Students are able to learn based on their need and
ability through differentiation approach that will look at
student’s talent and skills through The Three Bridges
Design for Learning (Room to Discover, 2020). This
learning method also emphasizes on social-emotional,
count in student’s opinion is also part of student-centered
learning in order to assist students to grow their thinking
Figure 2: The sign of SCL by Education Services and communication skills. All these elements in SCL will
(Room to Discover, 2020) also be supported by integration of technology in class.
Student-Centered Learning Strategies
Student-Centered Learning activities can be organized in various approach and medium. A choice board is an
activity that offers a student to select events to practice or demonstrate their understanding. These activities
empower student’s ownership to choose what the students want to learn, whereas this exercise not only for
assessment but also as learning material to introduce a new lesson. The rest of the SCL activities are listed
below:
•Choice Board
•Jigsaw Method
•Inquiry-Based Learning
•Project-based Learning
•Flipped Classroom
