DE’ UNITE: SHE 101 – HIMPUNAN LAPORAN TEKNIKAL PROJEK PELAJAR
There are instances of children with autism in the west being able to achieve Ph. Ds and Masters,
such as Dr. Temple Grandin, an American woman with autism who graduated with a Ph. D and is now
an Associate Professor. Jean- Paul the son of Dr. Julie Donnelly, the author of ‘Emergence from Autism
– Is there Hope?’ managed to obtain two Master degrees and now has a steady job. Donna Williams,
an Australian woman who had been diagnosed as severely autistic is now a lecturer. Given the
appropriate early intervention programme and education, children with autism have the chance to
improve themselves and contribute to society.
2.0 Symptoms of Autism
2.1 Communication and Language Disorders
Children with autism suffer from communication disorders such as slow talking and some who fail
to speak as a whole. Children with autism will communicate using body language by mimicking what
others call and they will not be able to understand what is being said.
2.2 Cognitive Problems
Cognition means the process of interpreting, learning and understanding something. According to
researcher Michael Waldman the effects of autism, his journal discusses that autism children are
suffering from partial blindness. The autism kids have a hard time understanding the concepts that
normal people think.
2.3 Slow Development
Children with autism usually develop a slower motor development than normal children. Their
ability to crawl, talk and walk is a bit lacking.
2.4 Need Excessive Attention
One of the signs of autism is that these children are uncomfortable with strangers. They are
comfortable only with parents and close family members. Their ability to socialize with other is quite
limited. Children with autism find it difficult to make friends and play with people outside their comfort
zone.
2.5 Not Flexible
This is a mild feature of autism in which children with autism are often unable to accept change.
They will act out of control when the situation or order of things seems foreign to them. Children with
autism find it hard to let go of their favourite things.
2.6 Emotional Disorders
People with autism face unstable emotional problems. They tend to laugh, get angry and cry on
their own for no good reason. If they fail to get what they want they will be aggressive and difficult to
control.
2.7 Repeated Action
Children with autism often repeat such things as wiping their hands, looking at the ceiling or turning
their hands. Also, they are also easy to replicate the actions or sounds they hear over and over again.
Children with autism are also limited to one or two things.
