Problem Statement
Nowadays there are still a lot of races and religions that slamming over another. This issue is known
as racism. In other word, it also means prejudice and discrimination which is directed against other
people because they are in different races and religions. Racism often happened based on the social
perception of biological differences between people. Well this issue is not something new in this world.
It happened since World War I in 1933 when Germany defeated. That country ingrained anti-Semitism
was successfully exploited by the Nazi Party leaded by Adolf Hitler. In North America, Black and Whites
issue is one of the major cases. So, what will happen if there is racism among peoples? The racism will
affect the unity in a community. Malaysia is a country that consist of three major races and few minor
races. The three main races in Malaysia are Malay, Chinese and Indian. Well this racism issue happened
in every country. It is not the races to be blame. Also, not the religion or the country, it is because of
some irresponsible human who like to discriminate other people because they are not in the same
races or religions. As mentioned above, racism will affect the unity in a community. The question is,
effected in a good way or bad way? Obviously, everyone knows the answer, which is in a bad way.
Racism will destroy unity between each other especially a community that consist of difference races.
There is a lot of countermeasures have been made for this issue. Some examples of countermeasure
are antidiscrimination law, cultural assimilation, cultural pluralism, multiculturism, non-violence and
many more. For this research, sports will be the main theme. The research is to check whether sport
can destroy racism and help united people in Malaysia regardless races and religions. Why sports?
Because everyone loves sports regardless age, race and religion. Sport has the power to cross divides
like no other form of entertainment. Sports speaks no language, no race nor culture. It also breaks the
racial barriers because sports actually had no barrier. No matter what kind of sport, players from every
angle of this world are tasked to work together in pursuit one common goal which is victory. In order
to achieve the goal, players must be aside their differences to achieve the win. From this, sport can
create the sense of working together and feeling support even from difference races.
Research Objectives
Every research made must have an objective. For this research, the objective is to prove that sports
can unite the people of Malaysia regardless races and religions. The aim is to give awareness to the
public about the importance of cooperation among races and religions to achieve unity that can lead
to a harmony environment. Other than that, the research is to show how sports can affect the unity of
people and destroy racism attitude among people in Malaysia. This research target audience is
PUSASDA’s trainee. A sport event was held there, Sepak Takraw. While the trainees were playing Sepak
Takraw, it shows that even they are not from the same races and religions but they play well as a team.
This research is to show that sports can create unity and cooperation among people. While cooperating
with each other to win the game, the trainees didn’t realize it shows that they were united.
Other than that, this research is also to promote the important of national unity to youth. The youth
community plays an important role in ensuring the success of national unity. The youths have the
potential to develop the national unity to the next level. Therefore, recognition and contribution from
youths is highly needed as they are representing the future generation of national leaders. In advancing
this national unity concept in our beloved country, the youth role is to understand and respect the
diversity of our ethnic culture in Malaysia. This concept known as 1Malaysia. The 1Malaysia concept
puts away the social-cultural and economic background between people different races and religion.
