Largely because of this pressure, Constantine
divided the empire, in order that there might
be greater strength to resist invasions. The
time came when all the resources which Rome
could muster, were insufficient to repel the
invaders.
In the year 395, the Goths, with their
renowned leader, Alaric, invaded the Eastern
Roman Empire. As they crossed the Danube,
the dividing line between the territory of the
Romans and the wilds of Germany, in the
middle of a winter of uncommon severity,
they came like the hail from the north, and one
of the Roman poets has said, “They rolled their
ponderous wagons over the broad and icy
back of the indignant river.” Alaric was no
mean leader; but bold, artful, and more than a
