filled the city with terror. For six days the city

was in the hands of the invaders. At the end of

that time, “at the head of an army,

encumbered with rich and weighty spoils,

their intrepid leader advanced along the

Appian Way into the southern provinces of

Italy, destroying whatever dared to oppose his

passage, and contenting himself with the

plunder of the unresisting country.” On the

death of Alaric, in 410, he was succeeded by

his brother-in-law, Adolphus, who allied

himself with the Romans; he assumed the

character of a Roman general, and later,

married the sister of Honorius, the emperor.

Thus, the conquest of the Goths over the

weakened Roman Empire, was complete.
