               Genseric and the Vandals grew strong on the


               southern  shore  of  the  Mediterranean.  Soon



               their  borders  were  too  narrow,  and  the


               success  of  their  fleet  added  Sicily  and  other


               places to the barbarians. In June of the year


               455,  a.  d.,  Genseric  and  his  Vandals


               disembarked at the mouth of the Tiber, and


               Rome  was  again  at  the  mercy  of  the


               barbarians.  The  pillage  lasted  fourteen  days


               and nights; and all that yet remained of public


               or  private  wealth,  of  sacred  or  profane


               treasure,  was  diligently  transported  to  the


               vessels  of  Genseric  The  Empress  Eudoxia,


               with  her  two  daughters,  was  compelled  as


               captive  to  follow  the  haughty  Vandal.


               Thousands  of  Romans  were  likewise


               transported  as  slaves  to  the  capital  of  the
