pleasure. Later, Attalus, the tool of Alaric, was
degraded in the presence of the people; his
diadem was taken from him, and as if to offer
insult to injury, the haughty barbarian sent
the ensigns of royalty to Honorius, the real
emperor, who was trembling behind the
fortifications of Ravenna. Folly and
imprudence provoked the Goths, and the city
of Rome was awakened one night in the year
410 by the tremendous trumpet of the
barbarian soldiers. Rome was ravaged. The
gold and the silver, the silver plate and costly
furniture from Roman palaces, were loaded
