PARTY WALL ACT EXPLAINED
Under the Party Wall Act of 1996 it is necessary to obtain written permission from your
neighbours if steel beams are used in the construction of your loft.
This is purely a formality as this cannot be refused; only delayed for a maximum period of 2
months.
The act was put in force mainly in Central London due to people having conversions which then
hindered the neighbouring property doing works in the future.
In no way will this be the case with your loft and I would be grateful if your neighbours could
be made aware of this.
In basic terms, the form is designed for your neighbours to acknowledge that in the unlikely
event of us knocking a brick by accident in their loft we would be 100% liable and that we
would rectify the works at solely our cost and at a time convenient to them.
During the course of construction the local authority will be inspecting our works on yours and
your neighbours behalf to ensure that the act is not contravened.
If your neighbours have any concerns or queries regarding this they may call me direct.
Please note that we do not require the forms, they are purely for your own records.
