Method Statement
Stairs, Landings, Balustrades and
Handrails (Internal and Exterior)
Equipment
Personal protective equipment. Single solution mopping equipment ( i.e.
bucket, wringer and mop )
Broom / dust control mop, as necessary. Bucket.
Cleaning agent. Vacuum
Cloths. Abrasive pad.
Refuse sacks. Warning signs – alternative route signs.
Health, Safety and Environment Requirements
Wear personal protective clothing.
Additional care must be taken on external areas during inclement weather.
On stairs use as little water as necessary.
Do not use soaps as this can make the floor slippery.
Avoid splashing cleaning agent, particularly if the is of open plan design.
Wipe any splashes immediately.
Ensure the bucket on the landing is behind the line of work.
Be aware of a potential trip hazard whilst working backwards and down stairs.
Only return warning signs when floor is completely dry.
Tasks
1 Put on personal protective clothing.
2 Assemble equipment and check for safety.
3 Place warning signs / alternative route signs.
4 Ventilate the area if appropriate.
5 Check surfaces for chewing gum and remove if necessary.
6 Remove debris from main flow areas not vacuumed daily
7 Empty external ashtrays/ remove all cigarette ends from entrance area.
8 Remove all debris from external disabled ramps.
9 Litter pick car parks, entrance steps, forecourts, loading bays, external
walkways etc. and remove rubbish/debris.
