Method Statement
Stairs, Landings, Balustrades and
Handrails/ 2
Tasks
Landings and Stairs
10 Sweep the landing, then stairs, from top to bottom, paying particular attention
to corners and edges.
11 Pick up debris, place into a refuse sack and remove to disposal point.
12 Prepare cleaning solution in a bucket according to manufacturer’ instructions
adding detergent to water.
13 Apply solution to an area of floor using a mop.
14 Mop the landing with a figure of 8 stroke with each pass overlapping.
15 Clean adjacent to skirting ‘ cutting in’ parallel to skirting boards.
16 Use abrasive pad to remove stubborn marks.
17 Ensure bucket is behind line of work on the landing.
18 When wringing out mop, stand in front of wringer and press down firmly, if
applicable.
19 Continue down the stairs using the deck scrubber or edging tool, if necessary.
20 Pat particular attention to the edges, corners and risers.
21 Rinse the mop regularly and change the cleaning solution if required.
22 On the stairs use the minimum amount of liquid to achieve the desired result,
especially if the stairway is of open plan design.
Balustrades and Handrails
23 Identify the type of debris to be removed.
24 If dry dust, cleaning using a static duster paying particular intention to
balustrade rails, string capping, outer string and handrail.
25 If damp wiping is necessary, prepare cleaning solution in a bucket according
to manufacturers instructions, adding solution to water.
26 Using a damp cloth wrung almost dry, wipe surface using smooth strokes. As
necessary, rinse cloth in clean water and repeat.
On completion of task
27 Clean the equipment and check for safety.
28 Return equipment and materials to store.
29 Return warning signs when floor is completely dry and close ventilation if
appropriate.
