Communication
Context
At its simplest level communication is still about messages being
received, understood, valued and acted upon. Simple to say but much
harder to achieve in a world where everyone is fighting to grab attention.
Technology and the digital work arena provide the tools and channels to
communicate effectively with employees. The important thing to
recognise is they are just delivery tools – it requires a lot more than this
to get communication working effectively within your organisation. You
need the infrastructure and resources to make it work.
If your communication is a tactical afterthought rather than a strategic
tool - you are missing a business-critical function. Companies
communicate to ensure that their employees get, support and do
things that will make a measurable impact on the business.
Good communication is the fundamental people skill for Leaders and
Managers. They need the right skilled support working with them. The
purpose of an internal communication function is to help inform and
engage employees; to support behaviour change; build pride in the
business and to deliver measurable value to the organisation. This should
be a strategic business partnership.
Typically, businesses audit their communication channels effectiveness
rather than a comprehensive review of their business use of
communication as an enabler. When you are seeking to engage
employees more or create great experiences – first base is checking
how effective your communication framework is, to create and
deliver messages now that grab heads J, hearts ♥, hands I and
voices ).
