One of the worst tyrannies that can be exercised over individuals is the
tyranny of the majority. For Mill there was a need to limit the legitimate
interference of collective opinion and of government with individual
independence. To find that limit, Mill argued, was because human affairs are
imperfect, hence the need remains for freedom of debate and opinion, so
that a society can discuss with itself how to cope with its challenges and
achieve progress. Equally, individuals need to be free to think and
experiment with ways of living and seeking happiness, giving full scope to
differences of character and choice, so long as they harm no one else in the
process (Wolff 2006).
5. Conclusion
The idea of free development of individuality is essential to personal well-
being, and per implication then, for social well-being. This should be the
prime political target of a university and its management. To me the
difference between the masses and the elites lies in the will and ability to
make prominent decisions.
Finally, to me the essence of the matter is that students should feel proud
of their alma mater. They should not feel disadvantaged or inferior after
graduation. This can only be attained at a competitive university, not one
designed for the masses.
