2. Early Mobilization and Rehabilitation

Early mobilization plays a vital role in preventing complications and promoting faster recovery.
Rehabilitation is a structured process that gradually restores strength, flexibility, and functional
               mobility.

               Rehabilitation and Exercise Initiation

                   • Passive Range-of-Motion (PROM) Exercises:
o Assisted movements performed by a therapist or technologist to prevent joint stiffness.
o Essential for patients undergoing total joint replacements or prolonged immobilization.
                   • Active-Assisted and Active Range-of-Motion (AROM) Exercises:
o The patient starts moving the joint with or without assistance.
o Encouraged as soon as tolerable to prevent atrophy and joint contractures.

               Weight-Bearing Guidelines

                   • Non-Weight-Bearing (NWB):
o No weight on the affected limb; used after fractures requiring strict immobilization.
                   • Partial Weight-Bearing (PWB):
o Limited weight can be placed on the limb (e.g., toe-touch weight-bearing for hip
                              fractures).
                   • Full Weight-Bearing (FWB):
o Allowed when healing progresses and implants provide sufficient support.
                   • Orthopaedic Technologist’s Role:
o Reinforce the weight-bearing status prescribed by the surgeon.
o Educate patients on proper use of mobility aids (crutches, walkers, canes).

               3. Wound Care and Dressing Management

                   • Types of Postoperative Dressings:
o Sterile gauze with antimicrobial solutions: Used immediately after surgery to protect
                              the incision site.
o Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT): Used for complex wounds requiring
                              continuous drainage control.
o Absorbable Hemostatic Agents: Applied to surgical sites to control minor bleeding.
                   • Orthopaedic Technologist’s Role:
o Perform routine dressing changes using sterile techniques.
o Monitor wound healing, ensuring no signs of infection or excessive drainage.
o Educate patients on proper wound care at home, emphasizing keeping incisions dry and
                              clean.

               4. Long-Term Rehabilitation and Functional Recovery

                   • Gradual Return to Daily Activities:
o Encourage safe movement, emphasizing joint protection and energy conservation
                              techniques.
