day and every time he is just as astonished as the first time. He scolds those who

choose to come close to the sandbox; it’s not necessarily the sinners.
"Bloody pigs! Can't people get that it is not a fucking toilet? Same thing every

                   day."

Ann walks over to the bazaar that’s selling Turkish sweets. It's always around
the candy booths the girls meet. The music is playing loud now, and a dance

troupe wearing the Kurdish national costumes are dancing in a small space down

near the stage. The cat crawls under her hoodie, hiding. In addition to the pink
hoodie, she wears blue jeans, and as always, her old, worn-out Converse. Even in

wintertime, she always puts those shoes.
Abdel from her class walks towards her. "Hi Ann, where have you been?"

"I've been out. I just bought a cat."

"A cat? Shit, what are you up to? You have to be observant on your school. Lars,
you know, he couldn't understand why you weren't there. We had the theme day,

you know, about new Danish music. "

Abdel is new in her class and comes from the same yard as her, the building
complex. He was a refugee and came to Denmark from Iraq, and since then he’s

been having a lot of problems. He is quite small in stature, and if you didn’t know,
he was 13 years old, you wouldn’t guess so; he looks more like a eight year old.

"They are very poor. Something must have happened at birth since he is still so

                   small,” Mom used to say.
Ann doesn't bother to explain any further, but instead asks Abdel if he has seen

                   Nadeem or Bedrana.

"Yeah, I just saw them. They were standing here by the music, talking to some of
the people here, asking about the microphone."

He spits every time he completes a sentence. A lot of the yard-kids do that,

including all her friends. Ann has done it too, but Lissi stopped her, saying that if
it kept on repeating, she would withdraw all her pocket money.

As they stand and talk, more people come and the light in the yard is now lit; it

does this every day at exactly 8 o’clock.
She doesn't want to be seen with Abdel, and she doesn't want to show him the

cat neither. People would think she's way younger than she really is. Abdel is still
wearing children's clothing, even though he is 13 years of age.
