"A mandrake, what's that?" asks Ann.
“A mandrake, a real mandrake, is a half plant and half human being who brings
good luck and endless riches to the one who has asked for its power. But beware,
it’s not only good fortune that resides within such forceful dark energy as that
plant contains. Walther made the covenant, and then later he broke it to his own
despair. He killed my grandfather. If you break the covenant, as Walther did, the
mandrake's forces turn against you, and your whole family line is eternally
damned. "
"I don't believe you. You are crazy," Ann says defiantly. She just wants them to
disappear immediately, she doesn't want to hear anymore from them; she looks
away, finding the cat with her gaze instead.
“The dragon was buried in your yard alongside your old jewellery, which you
got in dowry. Its curse will not be lifted until you find and burn it. "
Ann no longer responds to their wild proposals, pretending not to hear.
"We are leaving now. Come on, Jano, we'll be in the woods, if you seek us. We'll
be back, as darkness grows” the woman says, and they slowly start to walk away
from her toward the place from which they came. The two figures move hovering
lightly across the meadow until they disappear in the distance.
"Ann, Ann! My child, why are you sleeping with all your clothes on? Now, you’re
soaked in sweat, and your cat has pissed bed. Oh my…. ”
Mom stands besides her bed, shaking her head, as well as Ann’s body to wake
her.
"Are you sick, Ann, are you ill?"
Slowly, Ann returns to reality. She is completely wet with her own sweat, and
her one arm is in an awkward position over her head, as if she wants to protect
the cat from danger. She opens her eyes and looks straight into Mother's worried
face; she has the old familiar smell, perfume and cigarette smoke, and she’s still
in her work clothes.
"No," replies Ann, "I just fell asleep while I was watching Netflix."
Ann is now fully awake and gets up on one elbow as she twists the sleeping arm
to bring it back to life.
