Shortly thereafter, they stand in front of a sign that reads: “RASHID HAMBRAD’s
MINIMARKET”. Janokovic points to the flyer hanging out in front.
“BRIGHTON IN GRIEF: FOUR PEOPLE KILLED AT THE HARBOUR” it reads on
the flyer, which is a cut-out from the local newspaper, Brighton Post.
The Sun also has a flyer which says:
“THE PARIS WHEEL MASSACRE: FOUR PEOPLE SLAUGHTERED IN BRIGHTION”
"Wait here."
Janokovic enters the minimarket, and as he steps in the door, he is greeted by the
ringing sound of little bells that’s hanging on the front door.
"A pack of North State, please" Jano says.
"Yes please."
Behind the counter is an elderly Pakistani woman, looking disinterested at him.
She gets up and puts away the pear that she's about to peel. Then she takes a
pack of North State-cigarettes down from the shelf behind her and places it on
the counter in front of him.
"Anything else?" She asks him in broken English.
He shakes his head and puts 40 pence on the counter.
She takes the money and puts 2 shillings back on the counter.
"Uh, can I ask you something?" Janokovic casually says, as he’s taking a step
back and walking out of the kiosk. "My English is not so good," the woman
replies, pulling her pink scarf up in front of her mouth, as if she’s trying to signal
that she would prefer not to talk.
“What has happened down at the pier? Did you hear anything about it?
Janokovic continues undeterred.
"I know nothing, I know nothing. You have to ask Rashid, when he comes back. I
can’t say anything."
"Okay," says Janokovic, smiling his most innocent smile to date.
"I'll talk to him later then. Or, well, let me buy a newspaper then." He puts some
small coins on the counter and grabs a copy by "The Sun". The woman takes the
money, puts it in the cash register, and hands him the change while also giving
him an embarrassed, toothless smile.
“Keep it. Rashid is a friend of mine” says Jano, turning around and heading out of
the store and into the street.
