fact, it’s mainly tourists who goes down there anyway. Normal townsfolk can't

afford being there with those prices. "
Mom is staring at him suspiciously. She has put on some nice garments, a green

and red skirt, a loud red turtleneck blouse and high-heeled booties. Mother's face

is quite narrow, but pretty. She has a thick layer of makeup on and extra long
eyelashes. Mom wishes to look like a gypsy; she claims that at home in

Yugoslavia, the Gypsy women are the sexiest. People think she looks younger

than she really is; maybe it's because her hair is "sparkly black".

She is the opposite of Jack, always looking smart in fashionable new clothes; the
cheap kind tough. Mom likes to "make something out of herself". Jack always

wears either sandals or clogs. Today he isn’t wearing socks in his clogs. Jack

always says it’s important to give your feet air. While he is only in his late forties,
most people expect him to be close to sixty. Jack is slightly hunched, and the

many cigarettes that he smokes have given his lips a yellowish tinge.

“I’ll go up and grab a shower. I’m knackered. George, my friend, kept me awake
all night; he says he has problems at home after his real father left his mother

                   and their lives. "
"Well, you already knew I'd say that," Mom says, still looking at him quite

suspiciously. “It's incredible that this is going on for so long. Why is it so hard for

you to take a bath? I hate having to force you. Well, Jack and I will be gone in a
few hours, we are going to drive to the Essex-market. We’ll be back for dinner.

We’ll buy something on our way home, so you’ll be here, right? ”

"I'm am here. I have some homework to do for Monday."
"And please do the dishes and clean up your mess after yesterday. I won’t do it."

He swerves past her without answering, through the jumble, on through the

narrow corridor and up the stairs to the first floor.
He goes into the room and begins to take off his clothes. As he stands there, in

his underpants, he walks out into the bathroom. He pulls the ragged curtain

aside and turns on the water. The shower cabin is so small that Jack won’t fit in
there, but now he has put out a piece of linoleum that he moves so that it’s

possible for him to stand outside the shower cabin and bathe. Janokovic can still
                   easily stand inside the cubicle.
