he devoured the brown cabbage, then the sausages. Greedily he swallowed one

                   mouthful after another.
After the third glass of home-made scnhapps, he lifted the glass and invited

                   Trudie to cheer with him.

"We're going to celebrate my work."
"Well, cheers," Trudie meekly said, as she only sipped on the half-full glass, she

                   had poured.

She subsequently tied the apron aorund her, outside the nightgown. Uno stuck
his fork down on the plate, forcing himself to finish the last potato.

"They want me to do something bad,” he said.
Uno turned on the radio and grabbed a bundle of reichsmark from his wallet.

"Here you go. It's for you. A gift. I'm going to make real money now."

It annoyed Uno, that Trudie didn’t thank him for the money. Or at least asked
him about the meeting. Instead, she found her knitwear and sat down

concentrated and devoted to the work.

"Let's have one more," ordered Uno and poured a schnapps for both of them.
They sat a bit and listened to the music without saying anything. The silence

made Uno uncomfortable, and he asked his wife to find som cookies. Just to
break break silence. He wasn’t really hungry.

He poured a new round of schnapps. He couldn’t remember when he last drank

like this. The alcohol wrapped around his words like a soft blanket. All the words
he always wanted to say, but had kept inside.

"You're beautiful," he suddenly exclaimed, and discovered a heat in his chest,

which he hadn’t felt in a long time.
He stood up. And with clumsy movements, he walked to her, and stroked her

gray hair with his hand. Then he went back to the chair and sat down. Uno hand

was shaking, as he reached out for the bottle, and downed the rest of the
schnapps with a swift movement. With watering eyes he looked at his wife.

                   "I mean, you are beautiful."

                   "Why do you say..."
She didn’t get to say anything further, before she was possesed by one of

his frequent coughing attacks. The thin woman bent over the knitting piece. With
a slight wobbly walk, Uno rose again from his and hit in her back gently.
