Gunwi Church was established in 1920 by William Heslop, a missionary from Oriental
Missionary Society, with the money he received from selling his organ. Gunwi is still a small
city in the province. Gunwi Church is an Evangelical Holiness Church and was built in an
area dominated by Presbyterianism, but it has been growing beautifully. It was not easy to
lead a religious life under Japanese rule.
In 1937, at the peak of the Japanese persecution, Pastor Lee Jong-ik and Deacon Noh
Sung-woon were called by God when the building collapsed while demolishing the old
chapel and preparing a new place to worship. When many church members left the
church due to the Japanese oppression, those who guarded the church with hopes for the
kingdom of God gave their lives to God. In honor of their deaths, a monument was erected
to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the church's founding on November 20, 1990.
