        Vayikra 23:42
You shall live in booths for seven days; all citizens in Israel shall live in booths.

From this pasuk, the Sages derived the following general principle concerning the obligation of dwelling in a sukkah:

’א דומע ,וכ ףד ,הכוס תכסמ ,ילבב דומלת 2 .

        Masechet Sukkah 26a
Abaye says: Dwell in the manner that you usually live.

                                                                              םש ,י”שר 3 .

        Rashi, Sukkah 26a
Usually live – The Torah required a person to leave his house and live in the sukkah with his bed and all his
vessels and sheets, in the manner in which a person lives in his house during the entire year…

From the course of the discussion in the Gemara about the mitzvah of sukkah, it is clear that dwelling in the sukkah is
defined primarily with respect to three matters: Eating, drinking and sleeping. However, the tannaim argued as to the
        reason behind the mitzva.

        Masechet Sukkah 11b
It was taught in a baraita: “For I settled Bnei Yisrael in booths [sukkot]” – this refers to the clouds of glory that
were there, this is the opinion of Rabbi Eliezer. Rabbi Akiva says that [God] made them real booths.
