With regard to this issue, the Shulchan Aruch rules as follows:

Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 625:1
You shall dwell in sukkot for seven days… for I settled Bnei Yisrael in booths,” this refers to the clouds of glory
that surrounded them to protect them from the sun and heat.

The Mishna Berura elaborates:

Because I settled them in booths, etc. these are the clouds of glory – As an example of this we are commanded
to make booths in order to remember the wonders and miracles. Now even though we left Egypt in Nisan, we
were not commanded to build booths at this time for these are the summer days and most people make booths
for shade then, such that it would not have been noticeable that we are doing so to fulfill the commandment of
God. Therefore, He commanded us to do it in the seventh month which is the [beginning] of the rainy season
and most people leave their booths at this time and enter their houses, while we leave our houses and enter the
sukkah, showing that we are doing this to fulfill the commandment of Hashem (Tur). The Acharonim write that
we should have in mind when sitting in the sukkah that God commanded us to sit in it as a remembrance that
we left Egypt and that He surrounded us with the clouds of glory to protect us from the heat and sun. This is all
to fulfill the mitzvah in the best way possible, but post facto one fulfills one’s obligation as long as one intended
to fulfill the mitzvah.
