Responsa Mishpetei Uziel, Volume 3 Miluim, 5:5
The custom among all the communities of Israel is to blow one hundred blasts of the shofar on Rosh Hashana.
They based this on the verse written in the psalm recited on Rosh Hashana: “All the nations will clap hands
[kaf]” (Tehillim 47:2). The numerical value [of kaf] is one hundred, and they blow a tekia gedola after that. And
Heaven forbid that one change the custom of the Jewish people, which was instituted and accepted by our Sages,
may their memory be blessed. Anyone who alters [the custom], the Sages are not pleased with him.

…like the blowing of the shofar, where the Torah only stated, “a day of terua it shall be for you,” meaning one
terua, but we blow a hundred blasts and it is all “a secret of Hashem [revealed] only to those who fear Him.”
When we understand the reason [of a halacha], we perform it with greater zeal and desire.
