Project: BW9 and BE3-7 Laboratory Renovations
David Rittenhouse Laboratory
Client: University of Pennsylvania
Project Area: 2,890 s.f.
Completion: Fall 2018
Two new researchers joined the Physics Department in
Spring 2018. Both researchers use lasers in their work
and required a dark space with limited building vibration.
The basement of the David Rittenhouse Laboratory
offered an optimal location to meet these conditions.
Zimmerman Studio designed two laser laboratories
tailored to the needs of each researcher. A large overhead
shelf supplies power, data, lighting, and air distribution
above the laser tables. Laboratory casework was specified
at the perimeter walls and upgraded finishes were
incorporated. In order to provide the specified
environmental conditions, a new air handling unit was
designed for the suite and insulation was added at the
foundation walls. In order to reduce vibration and noise,
the laboratory wall adjacent to the Mechanical Room
received acoustical insulation and isolation pads were
placed below the existing air handling unit. Laser Curtain Track
