Project: Jefferson Alumni Hall – Fifth Floor
Freezer Facility Renovations
Client: Thomas Jefferson University
Project Area: 2,230 s.f.
Completion: Fall 2016
Zimmerman Studio LLC worked with Thomas Jefferson University to
create a central freezer facility in Jefferson Alumni Hall (JAH). The goals
for this facility include tracking freezers used for research, and
improving egress corridors within the building. The space allocated for
the facility had not been renovated since JAH was constructed in the
1960s.
During the feasibility, we determined the maximum number of freezers
that the space could accommodate, and also reviewed the infrastructure
upgrades required to support them. A new mechanical system and Uni-strut Detail
electrical room was constructed within the project area. The chilled
water capacity of JAH was analyzed, to confirm that it was sufficient for
the project. The renovation scope included selective demolition of
existing partitions and finishes, epoxy floor coating, doors with card
reader access hardware, acoustical panel ceiling assemblies, and new
light fixtures.
All freezers are connected to emergency electrical power and the
building information system. This creates consistent, monitored
conditions for research specimens.
